Buzkashi
I didn't fully understand what was going on. This game can be played as 2 teams or each man for himself, I have no idea which one I was watching, I’m guessing each man for himself…?
The day or week before the match a small calf and/or a goat is killed. They take the head off and sew up the hole and soak the body in cold water or brine, to toughen the hide. The carcass is like the ball they use to score with.
Then a bunch of men on completely wild horses run around, scoop up the carcass by hanging off the side of their horse and try to drop it in a white circle. Like in half court basket ball, when the other team attempts they have to drag the goat all the way around the arena around a post to come try to drop it in the circle.
Above is a man, reaching down to grab the goat on the ground. You can see how the horses are yanked around.
There are no rules, as far as I saw. The horses are basically in a massive pushing, kicking and whipping match, they are jumping up on top of each other, everyone is using their whips on other horses and often they also beat the person who has the goat. It is just this wild fight over the carcass. Sometimes two people will get hold of the carcass and they just have a tug of war over it. I felt bad for the horses.
Above picture the man has the goat, he is circling around to the white ring he has to drop it into, you can see it under the other horses who are blocking him.
I don’t know how the game ends, we left early, but I have heard the game can go for days. That has to be one of the strangest things I have seen.

This must be the Afghani Super Bowl. It certainly wouldn't work in our politically correct country!
What do they do with the head after the game? What do the winners get? Maybe the rest of the goat?
We need to come up with a good name for this. How about "Goat Polo" or "Revenge of the Lonely Goatherd."
It IS goat polo! or more like polo is Ball Buzkashi. I'm pretty sure it's where the Brits got the idea for polo. I did a report on polo and its history in junior high. For the presentation, my partner and I decorated a ball to look like a goat's head and had everyone play (without horses of course). That's so cool that you got to see it in real life, Jo.
Suzanne, I am so impressed that you know that.
Did you know that Journey is playing at the US National Polo match? No joke, look it up if you don't believe me.
i say more power to 'em. we played with a rawhide football every sunday afternoon when i was growing up (even though it was nice and tan and said "wilson" on it), and that really isn't any different than playing with a horse and a goat.
i would have a hard time with the lack of rules though. i was very much a stickler for order and conduct. buzkashi would drive me crazy.
Come home! Baseball is starting!
I think they should add to the mayhem and cut a chicken's head off and let the body run.
yes i like the chicken idea. i think that would really add a little something that is lacking in this game. also what if they played it with merry go round horses. that might make even that much more challenging. you know cause of the poles and going in a circle and all.
I'm laughing so hard right now, milk is coming out of my nose.
